Free drum lessons video by Musiprof Instructor Elijah explaining how to play the drum part to Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic. This is a funky, intermediate level groove. For something a little easier read our post on Bruno Mars Uptown Funk. This beat uses 16 note doubles on the bass drum. I would advise to learn a few 16th note bass drum exercises before trying this song. To find a qualified teacher in Montreal visit Drum Lessons Montreal.

Sizzle the hi-hats

The tricky part of this groove is to sizzle the hi-hats on beat one only. I recommend playing heel-down. Don’t open the hi-hat, just loosen the pressure from your toes.

Add the 16th notes on the bass drum

The next step is to add the bass drum part. The 16th notes can be tricky to feel solid on, so working on some kind of doubles exercises for the foot is ideal. Feel free to contact me for a free drum lessons exercise on developing doubles with your foot.

Adding the snare rimshot or backbeat

The last step is to add the snare on 2 and 4. Playing a rimshot accent works well for the funky type of groove. Being consistent on rimshot accents can be difficult as well. I recommend isolating the rimshot and practise just playing the accent on it’s own for a few minutes. You can then put it all back together afterwards.

Adding the fill

The final cherry on top is the little fill at the end of the groove. Move your right hand from the hi-hat to the snare to play this fill.

Happy practising!
