Information about the International Driving Permit in the United Arab Emirates:

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed two United Nations conventions, and it is a legal requirement for visitors to have a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) in order to rent a car and legally drive in the Emirates. All visitors who plan to drive in the UAE must make sure they obtain an IDP in their home country or country of residence before they travel.

The IDP, which is valid for 1 year, proves that you hold a valid driver’s license in your country of residence. It will also help protect you and your family in the event of an accidental and/or vehicle damage while driving abroad, or the loss of legal identification such as a passport. The IDP is recognized all over the world and is available in 10 different languages in order to help overcome language barriers.

Similarly, UAE nationals and residents who wish to drive abroad, need to apply for an IDP via the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE).

The Vehicles and Drivers Licensing Department of Abu Dhabi Police has identified three centres for issuing international driving licences as well as CPD [Carnet de Passage en Douane].
Colonel Mohamed Mayouf Al Kutbi, Director, Vehicles and Drivers Licensing Department, Abu Dhabi Police said, “International licences can be availed from the Vehicle Test Centre at Al Salama main building in Abu Dhabi; Adnoc Technical Inspection Centre in Falaj Hazza, Al Ain; and the main building in Tarif, Western Region.”
Also, motorists who wish to obtain round-trip admission certificates are required to collect CPD before having the certificate issued from the Automobile and Touring Club – UAE, which provides its services at the three identified centres, he added.
Col Kutbi explained that it is mandatory for all registered private vehicles to obtain a CPD from the Automobile and Touring Club – UAE when travelling abroad. However, there are exceptions to some categories such as vehicles of UAE citizens who are travelling to any of the GCC only; vehicles of GCC countries’ nationals residing in the UAE who are departing to their countries and returning; and vehicles of ministries and officials leaving to any of the GCC countries.
The General Command of Abu Dhabi Police strives to serve residents and citizens alike with all necessary resources in the shortest possible time, Al Kutbi said.
