You could use VM software like Parallels or VM Fusion to run 64-bit XP, but VM is not quite as fast as running the dedicated machine.
Boot Camp is required if you wish to boot the Mac directly into Windows. Since Parallels and VM Fusion run Windows concurrently there is no need to switch boot systems. Using Boot Camp you cannot devote an entire drive or volume to a Boot Camp partition. Part of the disk must remain formatted for the Mac. However, since Parallels and VM Fusion use disc images those images can be placed on any drive even an external drive.
